Today, the museum is dedicated to the colonial history of Hispaniola and displays materials from the period 1492–1821, the Spanish colonial era. The building itself is a listed historical monument and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo. Conveniently, the museum is centrally located in the old town and can easily be combined with walks to attractions such as Parque Colón, the Alcázar de Colón, the Catedral Primada de América, and the Fortaleza Ozama.
