Mehlinger Heath

Highlight • Natural

The Mehlinger Heide is in full bloom in August. On sandy roads you can walk through them. But it is also worth the round to expand the eselsbach and the pond.

Jewish Cemetery Mehlingen

Highlight • Historical Site

The Jewish cemetery in Mehlingen was opened in the 18th century. One of the first to be buried was probably David Levi from Sembach, who died in 1786. The Mehlinger Friedhof was an association cemetery for the Jewish communities in Otterberg, Mehlingen, Sembach, Frankenstein and Kaiserslautern. Even before and during the Nazi era, the cemetery was desecrated several times (see report below from 1923) and finally almost completely destroyed, then restored and later heavily damaged again during maneuvers on the former training area. In the meantime the community has restored it and fenced it in. The cemetery on parcels 294 and 295 covers 17.10 ares (of 38.80 ares of the two plots in total).

Heath Discovery Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Heideerlebnispfad also runs directly on the A63.
It is a bit louder on this side, but there are also stations such as "Types of wood", "Discover the scents of nature" or benches and a shelter.

The key to this Jewish cemetery can be borrowed from the Enkenbach-Alsenborn municipal administration - by prior arrangement. During my visit to this very old cemetery with beautiful trees, I could only find gravestones from the 19th century - if they were still legible at all. Most of the sandstone gravestones are very weathered, are literally crumbling or are badly damaged. The symbols of the "Levite jugs" (of Levite origin) and "blessing priestly hands" (membership of the Kohanim priestly family) on several gravestones are interesting. There is also a gravestone with an "angel" (very rare in Judaism). Erected on the initiative of relatives: In the middle of the cemetery (directly opposite the main entrance) there is a special memorial stone for 2 people buried here and 6 Nazi victims (including a mother with 4 children who were murdered in the Lodz concentration camp!). When the heath is in bloom in August, the Mehlinger Heide is an Eldorado for photographers. Accordingly, the heath is also heavily frequented in the morning during this time. The heath is particularly beautiful when the temperatures are around the dew point and a carpet of fog covers the landscape.

The Mehlinger Heide area is one of the largest heathland landscapes in southern Germany and has been a very popular excursion destination as a local recreation area and for holidaymakers in the Palatinate since 2005. It blooms most beautifully between August and September. It is wonderful at sunset, because the plants glow there.
