The Gräfenbrunnen fountain is a karst spring. It originates in the Wachsenburggraben, part of the Eichenberg-Gotha-Arnstadt-Saalfeld fault zone. In this zone, groundwater rises to the surface due to the damming effect of the clay layers found here. The spring is said to have had a very large discharge in earlier times, comparable to the Mühlberger Spring (2,000 liters per minute). In the 19th century, the spring was filled in and drained.
