This is better known as the 'Weerdse mill'. The remains of this building in combination with the meandering river De Zenne and vast meadows provide beautiful pictures. Until 1914, the beautiful lock tower of Weerde stood here. It regulated the flow for the water mill. The lock was built where the tide stopped so that there was never a countercurrent. The first stone of the lock tower was laid in the middle of the 13th century. The lock, the water and grain mill and later (1639) the fulling mill were successively owned by the Duke of Brabant, the Abbey of Grimbergen and the city of Brussels. The residents of the region were obliged to have their grains milled here. In addition, fishing, lock and navigation rights were collected. In September 1914, German gunfire destroyed the entire complex. Currently, only the ruins of the lock tower are still standing. Although there is a lot of demand to restore the original building to its former glory and rebuild it. But that is not yet the case at the moment. When walking or cycling along the path next to the Zenne, this building immediately catches the eye and you can still daydream about the time when it was still a fully-fledged, busy building. The Heidemolen in Malderen is a charming windmill dating back to 1864 and once served as a corn mill. Originally built as a standard mill, the structure was converted into a stone windmill in the 1940s. The mill sits picturesquely in the Flemish countryside, surrounded by fields and open space, and offers visitors a beautiful historical glimpse into the region’s mill building tradition.
