Before World War II, ships were loaded and unloaded at Wilfordkaai by men known in Temse as "kaailopers." Between loading and unloading, they passed the time by simply doing nothing. The term was also used for men who spent a lot of time on the quay. Some have lived on in our memories as legendary folk figures. Three figures in this sculpture group are based on real people. The fourth symbolizes all quay walkers. Valeer Peirsman completed this bronze artwork in 1991.

The towpath along the Scheldt between Drie Goten (Hamme) and Kastel (Moerzeke) is wonderful for cycling, walking, etc. Beautiful views of nature, the Scheldt guaranteed (in clear weather π).

The 1955 bridge caused considerable traffic congestion, a problem largely resolved since 2009 by the construction of a second parallel bridge. However, the current bridge complex remains a busy traffic intersection, and it largely defines the skyline of the Scheldt municipality of Temse. Cyclists can safely cross the bridge or cross the N16 under it.

From junction 76, you cycle through Tielrodebroek, a pot-holed polder along the confluence of the Scheldt and Durme rivers. Then you arrive in Schouselbroek, one of the first polders along the Scheldt. This area has been transformed into a flood control area, where mudflats and salt marshes form valuable natural habitats thanks to the ebb and flow of the tides. (Waasland Tourism)
