July 25, 2026, Grote of Sint-Maartenskerk Zaltbommel

The Grote of Sint-Maartenskerk was built in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of Lower Rhenish Late Gothic in the Netherlands. The master builder Gisbert Schairt, born in Zaltbommel, played an important role in the construction of this impressive national monument. Characteristic of the church is the high nave, which rises above the side aisles. This created an elegant window gallery, a characteristic element of the Lower Rhenish Late Gothic architectural style. The abundant daylight that enters through the high windows, combined with the warm colours of the interior, creates a special atmosphere where monumentality and intimacy uniquely come together. One of the absolute highlights of the church is the more than fifty medieval vault paintings. These works of art have been restored with great care and give visitors an impressive impression of the richness and beauty of the original medieval interior. A visit to the Grote of Sint-Maartenskerk is therefore not only an encounter with centuries of history, but also a unique architectural and cultural experience. https://www.maartenskerk.nl/sint-maartenskerk

‘The house of Maarten van Rossum in Zalt-Bommel can lay claim to the name ‘monument of history and art’: of history because of its founder, of art because of its great significance in the field of architecture and decoration.’ – Victor de Stuers in Eigen Haard, August 15, 1903 The imposing Maarten van Rossemhuis was built between 1535 and 1540 by Maarten van Rossem (c. 1495 – 1555), an influential Gelderland commander. Although it served as a residence, the thick stone walls, corner towers, turret, and battlements give it the appearance of a small castle. This remarkable building tells a story of wealth, power, and a turbulent history. Thanks to the close involvement of Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921), the government architect, and Victor de Stuers (1843-1916), government advisor for arts and sciences, the building was saved from destruction at the last minute. The Ministry of Justice purchased it. The property was restored and adapted, partly in medieval style, to serve as a cantonal court. The characteristic battlements, turrets, and the onion-shaped crowning of the turret are thanks to Cuypers. After the cantonal court left in 1934, the Maarten van Rossemhuis took on a museum function as a local antiquities room. Since the 1950s, this collection has formed the basis of the current Museum Stadskasteel Zaltbommel, where visitors can discover the rich history of Zaltbommel and its surroundings. This aircraft was shot down at or near this location. On the day of the crash, 27 September 1944, Edward Sargeant and his squadron took off for the second time that day from B.70 Deurne Airfield near Antwerp. The objective was a patrol over the Arnhem-Nijmegen landing zone area (Market Garden). On the way back, the aircraft experienced engine problems, possibly caused by anti-aircraft fire.
