The upper dunes are completely closed from March 1st to July as it is a breeding area. You can only go completely around, partly also via the road! It is annoying when Komoot keeps trying to lead you back to the closed path and doesn't suggest an alternative! The announcement that the path is 1.2 km to our right doesn't help!

Beautiful area for cycling, but you will need a dune map.

I did the tour yesterday and discovered that the recommended route is outdated. Several bike paths have been demolished and replaced with new ones, which aren't signposted. You have to search for them, but it's worth it. And always remember: if there's a dead-end sign, you can't go any further. Still worth seeing!

Be sure to drive through the dunes, there is always a different view, sometimes with fantastic flowering heather, then again with lots of temporary water holes, fantastic!

The Noordhollands Duinreservaat offers a diverse range of natural features. You'll find extensive dune landscapes, some of the highest and widest in the Netherlands, particularly at Schoorl Sand Dunes. The reserve is also home to grazing animals like Scottish Highland cattle and wild horses, which help maintain the open dune environment. Additionally, there's the unique Slufter, a dune area with creeks connected to the North Sea, and the 'Kalkovergang,' a geological feature marking a transition in soil composition that supports varied flora.
You can frequently encounter Scottish Highland cattle and wild horses throughout the extensive dune areas. A popular spot is the Dune trail with grazing cows and horses, Noordhollands Duinreservaat, where these animals are a common sight. The Slufter is also an excellent location for birdwatching and observing specialized salt-tolerant plants.

Autumn showcases vibrant colors in the forested areas and cooler temperatures. Even in winter, the dunes offer a serene and rugged beauty. The Schoorl Sand Dunes are noted for their beautiful contrast in all seasons, especially when the heather is blooming.
The Noordhollands Duinreservaat is crucial for drinking water production for almost all of North Holland and Texel. Since 1920, groundwater has been extracted from the dunes. Areas like De Kwal Water Outlet are where pre-purified river water is infiltrated into the sandy soil for natural filtration. These infiltration areas are rich in birds, fish, and plants due to the abundant water, contributing to the reserve's biodiversity.

Access to the northern nature reserve Schoorlse Duinen is generally free. However, for the Noordhollands Duinreservaat in the south, a dune card or admission card is required. These can be purchased as daily, weekly, or annual tickets from various sales outlets, including machines at entrances or via smartphone. Some accommodations in Bergen aan Zee may also include an access card with your stay.
Beyond the impressive dune formations, a unique geological feature is the 'Kalkovergang' (Lime Transition) in the middle section of the reserve.
