On the other side of the Kalverpolder, opposite the Zaanse Schans, stands a working American windmill. This is the mill that actually keeps the Schans dry. Although there is help from an electric screw pump on wet windless days, as far as they exist.

Tourist in your own country, great piece of culture 👌

Completely overcrowded, just a money-making scheme. You can't relax and look around. It's crowded, loud, hectic. In Enkhuizen, the Zederzee open-air museum and indoor are far more interesting, quieter and worth seeing.

Beautiful places to visit but... I recommend visiting outside of the tourist season.

The paint mill "De Kat" processes raw materials into pigments for traditional paint production. This was done using the recipe of the world-famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn. It is the only remaining paint mill in Zaanland. The mill was built in 1646, but burned down forty years later. Only the shed remained. Together with parts of another mill, this was converted into the current paint mill.
