De Kolksluis is the oldest still-working lock in Europe, located in Spaarndam in the Dutch municipality of Haarlem. On the north side of De Kolksluis lies the IJ and to its south lies the Spaarne. When the lock was built, completed in 1280, a wheel was used, a small lake (kolk) formed by an earlier dike breach: the current kolk. The special feature of the kolk lock is that it was the first lock with doors on the sea side, the IJ, and doors on the inland water, the Spaarne, with a lock chamber in between. Now ships could pass the dike independently of the tide. First, only small ships with lowered masts could pass, because the lock had lifting doors. Only in 1300 did the lock receive pointed doors and Hanseatic cogs, the workhorses of trade in the Middle Ages, could also pass the lock. The lock became an important work of art on the inland route from Scandinavia to important Flemish cities such as Bruges and Ghent.

At the end concrete slabs with ledges in between and quite narrow! Further nice path to dive into or leave Houtrak.

Check in advance whether any ferries are closed. At ‘t Schouw (Landsmeer-Ilpendam) this was the case, meaning a considerable detour. As a result, we arrived much later at our destination Holysloot. But that is certainly recommended! What a great experience that was.

Even from the bridge, you have a fantastic view of the windmills. Even more wonderful is the delicious smell of chocolate in the air during your visit.
