The Boniface Church is one of the oldest churches in southeast Friesland. The church building is the historic center of the village. The church was dedicated to Boniface when it was founded. In a document from 1553, the church is referred to as the Parish Church of St. Vitus in Antiqua Bercoop in Stellingwerff. Construction of the oldest parts of the church was probably completed around the year 1125. The old cemetery around the church is surrounded by a rustic ring wall, made of Frisian yellowstones. The ring wall probably dates from the early 17th century, the same period in which the tower was restored after previous destruction. The wall was intended to separate the consecrated ground around the church from the unconsecrated ground outside it. The ring wall was restored in 2011/2012. Old prints still show some entrance gates with stepped gables. In all probability there were four in total, one for each cardinal point. The western entrance gate was reconstructed in 2012.
