The former town hall was built in 1938. After a visit by the Minister of Internal Affairs in 1937, the then municipality of Sleen received an offer of 35,000 guilders from the work fund for combating unemployment and the construction of a new town hall. Preparations for the construction of the neo-renaissance design by architect A. Baart from Leeuwarden began in the autumn of 1937. A year later, on 3 October 1938, the building was officially opened.

The ‘Drentsche Veen- en Middenkanaal Maatschappij’ started in 1852 with the construction of the Oranjekanaal. The company bought peat land behind Emmen and in the Odoornerveen. In 1854 the canal diggers reached the place where the canal crossed the route from Coevorden to Groningen. This ancient road followed the Ridge of Rolde. This is where the village of Schoonoord eventually arose.

The original mill was built in 1859 and has since undergone several restorations and renovations. The mill is a so-called scaffolding mill, which means that the upper part of the mill can rotate to catch the wind. It has a characteristic round stone hull and a thatched roof. Korenmolen de Hoop is still in use and functions as a grain mill. It grinds different types of grain into flour, which can then be used to make bread and other baked goods. Grinding is still done in the traditional way using the wind power. The mill is open to the public and visitors can tour the mill and learn about the milling process and the work of the miller. The miller is often present to give explanations and demonstrations of grinding.
