Located in the heart of the Overloon Dunes, Schaartven is a remarkably clear fen surrounded by forest and heathland. Its water is fed by rain and groundwater, making it a sensitive nature reserve. The area surrounding the fen is a popular spot for dragonflies, frogs, and waterfowl, adding to the vibrancy of this tranquil landscape. The contrast between the open water and the surrounding sand dunes creates a unique atmosphere. Hikers experience a blend of tranquility, expansive views, and intimate woodland paths. Especially in the early morning or at sunset, Schaartven has an almost picturesque appearance.

Here you are standing at a special piece of history and the oldest aviation monument in the Netherlands. In 1871, a French balloon landed here that had risen a little from the then besieged Paris. The balloon was intended to keep in touch with the non-besieged part of France, but was blown in a different direction by an air current. The crew, who also had secret mail and a few bottles of wine on board, decided to land in the safe Netherlands, after which they continued their journey to their original destination as soon as possible to deliver the secret mail. As a reminder of this historic event, this balloon column was unveiled in 1896.

Beautiful nature around the fen. Too bad a part of the footpath has disappeared and you now have to do a part of the street.

Most graves date from this period. The layout of British cemeteries is uniform in all 140 countries where the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is responsible for the maintenance of the war graves.
