Wesel-Datteln Canal - "Built 1915 - 1931 as the Lippe-Seitenkanal on the southern slope of the river valley in its lower reaches. The Lippe was relocated in two places, e.g. in Dorsten. As one of Germany's most important and busiest shipping canals, the WDK overcomes a height difference of around 41 m over a length of 60 km in 6 canal locks. The WDK connects the Lower Rhine with the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Each canal lock initially had one lock chamber measuring 225 m in length and 12 m in width. In 1953, the calculated capacity of the canal was reached. Therefore, from 1960 to 1970, a second lock chamber measuring 110 m in length and 12 m in width was built at all canal locks. In the period 1992/93, the lifting gates at all large locks were replaced. This measure was necessary because the steel quality of the old structures no longer met the requirements. Due to the increase in traffic and technical demands, a route expansion took place between 1966 and 1990. The canal was significantly widened and has since been navigable by large push convoys." https://www.wsa-westdeutsche-kanaele.wsv.de/Webs/WSA/Westdeutsche-Kanaele/DE/Wasserstrassen/WDK-Allgemein.html
