The Schwarze Elster is a 179-kilometer-long right tributary of the Elbe in the German states of Saxony, Brandenburg, and Saxony-Anhalt. Originally heavily meandering, the course of the river, which rises in the West Lusatian mountains and flows into the Elbe near Elster (Elbe), was greatly altered from the mid-19th century onwards by regulation and straightening measures, and numerous side arms were cut off. Among other things, persistent heavy environmental pollution from the established industry, lasting until the 1980s, led to the near extinction of the once rich fish population of the Schwarze Elster.
