Please note that this bike/MTB highlight is off the official cycle path network. In the national park, cycling is only permitted on the paths that have been approved for this purpose, in order to protect the sensitive habitats of animals and plants and to avoid conflicts between user groups. Therefore I ask you to explore this highlight only on foot. Currently, according to the 1992 regulation and the 2012 amendment, cycling is only allowed on the following roads: 1. Hirschbichlstraße (state road 2099) and from the Bindalm bus stop to the alpine huts on the Bindalm; 2. Eiskar forest road to the fork in the path to the Schartennalm; 3. Eckau-Forststraße to Eckau-Alm with turnoff to the Schwarzederer-Wendeplatte; 4. Schappachstraße and Hammerstielstraße to Kühroint - turning point in front of the Archenkanzel - and forest road to Herrenroint; 5. Gotzenstraße and Hochbahnweg to Gotzenalm and access to the Stahlhaus; 6. Ligeretstrasse. The supplement to approved cycle paths from 2012 is in the Official Journal for the district of Berchtesgadener Land No. 20 from 05/15/2012 on page 127ff. (https://www.lra-bgl.de/t/das-landratsamt/amtsblaetter/). The ordinance is based on Art. 31 Para. 1 and Art. 43 Para. 2 No. 3 of the Bavarian Nature Conservation Act (BayNatSchG). We would be very grateful for your help to protect nature! If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. https://www.nationalpark-berchtesgaden.de/

The name is program; enchanting path along the Ramsauer Ache, also and precisely therefore well suited for children. It is best to come early in the morning or in the evening, then you will have the path almost to yourself. Together with the Hintersee an Eldorado for photographers.

The world-famous pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä on the Königssee The small peninsula of Hirschau on the west bank of the Königssee can only be reached on foot via a demanding alpine mountain tour lasting several hours. From Schönau, however, the approx. 8 km journey is possible by boat all year round. The ensemble of the church and the former hunting lodge, standing in front of the imposing Watzmann-Ostwand (East Face), forms one of the most popular motifs for photographers from all over the world. The church is very striking with its red dome roof, and the different shape of the two towers is also remarkable! Every year, on the first Saturday after St. Bartholomew's Day on August 24th, St. Bartholomä is the destination of the Almer pilgrimage. The high-mountain pilgrimage from Maria Alm in Austria via the Steinerne Meer is considered the oldest high-mountain pilgrimage in the world. From the pilgrimage church of Sankt Bartholomä on the Königssee, a beautiful and popular hiking trail leads to the so-called Eiskapelle (Ice Chapel) at the foot of the Watzmann-Ostwand. The lowest-lying year-round snowfield in the German Alps is fed by snow masses from the Watzmann, which plunge into the valley in spring and into the summer, forming a dome of ice and snow above the outflow of the Eisbach stream! https://www.berchtesgaden.de/bartholomae

The Malerwinkel is a popular viewing point on the north bank of the Königssee. The view from the Malerwinkel over the otherwise difficult to access Königssee extends over the pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä to the Schönfeldpitze in the Steinernes Meer. From the Königssee car park, a path leads along the picturesque boathouses into the Berchtesgaden National Park. Past the Café Malerwinkel, the walk leads to the so-called Malerwinkel. This hike is also very popular as a winter walk, then the path to the Malerwinkel is cleared and gritted. The captains of the electric boats of the Königssee fleet, or one of the companions, play a flugelhorn while traveling across the lake to demonstrate the echo to the passengers. Due to the elevated position, you can also hear the echo from the Malerwinkel. https://www.berchtesgaden.de/wandern/see-klamm-wanderungen/koenigssee-malerwinkel

Very nicely laid out path along the Ramsauer Ache. Ideal for children (but not only). The circular route through the enchanted forest and along the eastern shore of the Hintersee can be easily completed in three quarters of an hour.

The trout that are caught by the Königssee fisherman right next door are particularly recommended.

The best way to experience Königssee is by taking an electric boat tour across its emerald-green waters. These tours often include a stop at the St. Bartholomew Pilgrimage Church, Königssee. From the far end of Königssee, you can also access Obersee, a smaller, picturesque lake, and then take a relatively flat walk to Germany's highest waterfall, the Röthbach Waterfall.
The Röthbach Waterfall, Germany's highest, is located near Obersee. To reach it, you first need to take an electric boat across Königssee to Salet. From Salet, it's a pleasant walk to Obersee, and then approximately an hour's relatively flat hike from the Obersee boathouse to the waterfall.
The Wimbach Gorge offers a dramatic and immersive experience. Here, water has carved its way through stone, creating cascading waterfalls and unique rock formations. The narrow gorge provides a cool, misty atmosphere, making it a refreshing walk, especially on warmer days. The surrounding Wimbachtal is also known for its vast expanse of weathered rocks, the 'Wimbachgries'.
The best time to visit largely depends on your preferred activities. Summer (June to September) is ideal for hiking, boat tours, and enjoying the lakes, with pleasant temperatures. Spring (April-May) and autumn (October) offer beautiful scenery with fewer crowds, though some higher trails might still be closed in spring. Winter (December to March) transforms the park into a snowy wonderland, perfect for winter sports and serene landscapes, with attractions like the Jennerbahn operating for skiing and scenic views.
Absolutely. For an easy and scenic walk, explore the paths around Hintersee east shore, which offers a calm atmosphere and beautiful mountain views. The Enchanted Forest along the Ramsauer Ache is another gentle option, known for its unique landscape. The walk to the View of the Königssee from the Malerwinkel is also an easy and rewarding stroll.
Public transport is available within the Berchtesgaden region, with bus services connecting key towns and attractions. For places like Jenner Mountain, a modern cable car (Jennerbahn) provides easy access to panoramic views and hiking trails. Parking facilities are available at major entry points, such as Königssee.
