This is a real insider tip for nature lovers and families seeking tranquility away from the crowds. The place is located on an island in the Danube (in the Dunajské luhy nature reserve), about an hour's drive from Bratislava or Győr. It is an active organic farm. There are 300-400 year old oak trees, free-roaming animals (goats, horses, donkeys) and direct access to the river with small sandy beaches.

The Dunajské luhy (Danube floodplain) protected landscape area in Slovakia is a fascinating region for nature lovers. If you are specifically looking for a "shelter by the water", it is most likely the birdwatching hide at the Hrušov reservoir, which is often referred to exactly like that in hiking and cycling circles (e.g. on Komoot).

The birdwatching hide in Kalinkovo, often officially called "DUNA Bird Watching," is a real highlight for nature lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike. It is located directly on the shore of the Hrušov Reservoir (Hrušovská zdrž), about 18 km from Bratislava. It was designed and built in 2016 as a joint project by students from the Technical University of Bratislava (STU) and the Bergen School of Architecture (Norway).

It seems that this route has been newly developed. Komoot would have led us along the road below, but there was not much traffic there either. However, if you want to use the great little bathing lake, you have to leave the new cycle path and cycle along the bottom, but this is not a big effort and just needs to be planned. Otherwise, you cycle along the top completely car-free - it's great that the Hungarians are starting to develop their cycle paths!

This is now an official campsite. Very good, modern and clean toilet block. Very quiet at night. Great place to stand longer than a day. Excellent train connection Bratislava - Komaron. Swimming in the Danube from a safe beach.

Really great place to camp, also when you are arriving by bike. They have a perfect kitchen where you can cook, the grass is great for camping, there are lots of picknick tables with a roof, there is a campfire spot, you can buy a cold beer until 7pm and they even have multiple washing lines prepared for you.

While specific public transport options directly into the heart of the protected area might be limited, the region is generally accessible. Major towns and villages bordering the CHKO, such as those near Bratislava, often have train or bus connections. From these points, you might need to cycle or walk to reach specific attractions. For example, Ecofarm 🏕️ camping Ostrov is noted to have an excellent train connection between Bratislava and Komárno.
