The castle was built in 1807, largely of wood. It remained privately owned until 1969, when it became the property of the city. However, it fell into increasing disrepair until it was renovated in 1993, when it was largely destroyed in a fire. A restoration followed and it reopened in 1994. Today, the castle is a popular tourist destination with restaurants, a boat dock, concerts, and exhibitions. It has since been expanded to include a hotel and spa.

The seating board clearly shows the signs of time. Nevertheless, the small beach and the view here are simply fantastic!

Directly at the bird sanctuary near Skanvik, there is a small parking lot for approximately 10 vehicles. For those who simply want to explore the top of the reserve, it's a perfect starting point for a short hike. An information board with a hiking map and a portable toilet are also available.

This small, long tongue of rock jutting out into the Baltic Sea is excluded from the circular trail because it's a bird sanctuary. However, if the wind and waves aren't too loud, you can still hear the inhabitants quite clearly in the dense forest and scrub ahead.
