Just outside the village of Hou on National Cycle Route 5, keep an eye out for the whimsical roadside statue known as Houpingvinen – a fictional penguin species humorously native to the area. According to its sign, the Houping penguin (imperatoris pingo Housis) is a distant cousin of the emperor penguin and famously survives on kind words and caresses, especially from children.

A nice discovery along the way - the Hou penguin. Translation of the sign next to it: "Houping penguin (imperatoris pingo Housis) The Houping penguin is distantly related to the Emperor penguin (imperatoris penguin). Its preferred habitat is the Hou region near the ocean, but in principle it can live in any climate. It is known for standing completely still with its beak facing north. It is very modest in its feeding habits and thrives mainly on affectionate words and caresses, especially from children."
