Ruins of Neu-Wolfstein Castle

Highlight • Castle

Neu-Wolfstein Castle was probably built in the first half of the 14th century. In the course of its history it changed hands frequently: Sponheim, Kurpfalz, Flersheim, Sickingen and Pfalz-Veldenz are among them. In 1688 French soldiers destroyed the castle. But Neu-Wolfstein was rebuilt as early as 1695 and served as barracks for soldiers from the Electorate of the Palatinate until 1713. That year the castle was shot at and taken on the orders of the French Marshal Villar. In the partial ruins, the Georgskapelle served the Catholic community of Wolfstein as a church from 1720-71, and another building that has been preserved until 1798 was used as a rectory. Although the complex was in very bad condition as early as 1792, French soldiers took up residence in the castle two years later and used the chapel as a hospital.

The cycle path runs parallel to the historic railcar route, giving it a very special charm. The route is largely flat, making it ideal for leisurely rides or family outings. You'll cycle through the Glan and Blies valleys, past idyllic villages, fields, and forests – with plenty of nature along the entire Glan River.
