Town Hall, City Council Secretariat, Winterthur The pride of Winterthur is the town hall built by Gottfried Semper on the edge of the old town. With the economic boom and the increasing population, the need for space for administration, art, music and higher education arose. In 1863, it was decided to build a town hall. The Winterthur town hall, built between 1865 and 1869 by Gottfried Semper (1803–79), is one of the most outstanding works of historicism and, together with the Semper Opera in Dresden and the ETH main building in Zurich, is one of the great architect's most important buildings. In 1930, the building was extended by two window axes by the architect Leberecht Völki. The new building was intended to present and also fit into the neighborhood of the adjacent buildings of the Boys' Museum (now the Oskar Reinhart Museum at the Stadtgarten) and the old town schoolhouse. The monumental sandstone building with the enormous open staircase was built in the classicist style. On October 30, 1870, the first citizens' meeting took place in the community hall (now the concert hall). Shortly after its confluence with the Thur, the Rhine forms a magnificent loop in the middle of nature. The river is never as beautiful as when it undulates through the landscapes.
