There are many reviews written about Monteverde but mostly by the motorised tourists. It is challenging to get up here by the bicycle. Road leading to the mountain, Ruta Nacional 620, is all gravel in very bad shape with pavement starting once you get to the St. Elena. Inclines are very steep on few spots, specially once you get in to the village. Traffic is the worst part of the whole experience. Once you get up there, I recommend using public transit, taxi and hiking to explore the area. Nature is unbelievable, mix of primary and secondary cloud fores with trees growing on top of the trees. Take your time, don't get rushed by the hordes of one day tourists. As every popular place, Monteverde is a bit pricey but as a bike traveller we know how to get around. Hidden jem is motel Bella Vista Lodge, settled on one of the best viewing spots in the area with gazebo overlooking whole area, all the way to the Pacific. Clean, spacious bungalows with real breakfast served in your room for only $25 US. For your outside dining, just walk south few hundred meters on 620, to the Soda Tortilla's. Family run restaurant with incredible food for reasonable price. My favourite: Azteca soup, Pizza, Casado with fish. Great selection of local craft beer. Next door is supermarket to restock your supplies, get some beer for the room. Take rest and get your legs power back as you will have to go back and it's as bad as coming up. Enjoy and be safe.
