With the remaining 2 kilometers of the original city walls, Tallinn boasts one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Europe. It is largely this system of walls and towers that gives the Old Town its fairytale charm.

The Church of the Holy Spirit was built around 1300 as an extension of the original chapel of the city's almshouse. It was first mentioned in 1319. The oldest part of the non-east-facing church building is the choir, to which the two-aisled nave with ten cross-ribbed vaulted bays was added in the second half of the 14th century. The Church of the Holy Spirit is the smallest of Tallinn's medieval churches. It was completed in 1380. The Church of the Holy Spirit has played a central role in Estonian history. The city council regularly held Holy Mass here before its meetings in Tallinn's Town Hall. The first sermons in Estonian were delivered in the church from 1531 onwards.
