An impressive stop for geology fans and history buffs: The "Watzenhahner Riesen" are mighty, columnar basalt formations that originated about 25 million years ago through volcanic activity. In the past, hard work was done here – until the end of World War II, the quarry was used industrially and the rock was transported away by a mine railway. Today, nature has largely reclaimed the area. However, the huge columns, rising like organ pipes, still stand like a "cyclopean wall" on the mountainside and are a great photo opportunity right by the wayside. A true natural monument with an exciting mining past!

Actually a place to be scared of. This thing cannot be opened from the inside, which is illogical if you wanted to protect yourself from flying stones. As an explosives depot, yes, that would be understandable, but for protection???
