Penarth Pier is an iconic location, looking out over the Severn estuary with a 1929 art deco styled Pavilion building. Facilities include a gallery, cinema, cafe and an olde fashioned sweet shop.

Yes, the area is very welcoming for dogs. Many trails pass through open spaces and coastal paths. A particularly good option is the Rolling Hills – Cosmeston Castle loop from Morristown, which explores the popular Cosmeston Lakes Country Park. The park is a local favorite for dog walkers, offering wide paths and lakeside scenery. Please be mindful of wildlife in the nature reserves and keep dogs on a lead where required.

Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes in the area?

Definitely. The region has numerous gentle walks suitable for all ages. Many trails are relatively flat, especially those within Cosmeston Lakes Country Park. For a pleasant walk that includes some local landmarks, consider the Alexandra Park – Penarth Pier and Pavilion loop from Penarth. It's a fairly easy route that offers great coastal views and the classic seaside experience of Penarth Pier.

How do I get to Sully Island and is it safe to cross?

Sully Island is a tidal island accessible via a natural causeway from the mainland at Swanbridge Bay. You can only cross at low tide.

It is crucial to check the tide times before you go. A traffic light system is in place at the causeway to indicate safe crossing periods. Do not attempt to cross when the tide is coming in, as the currents are strong. Allow plenty of time for your visit to the island to ensure you can return safely before the causeway is submerged.

What is the history of Lavernock Point?

It's also the site of the Lavernock Battery, a coastal fort from the 1860s with gun emplacements that were used in World War II. Most notably, it's where Guglielmo Marconi sent the first wireless radio message over open sea in 1897, an event commemorated by a plaque at the nearby St. Lawrence's Church.

Where can I find parking for the coastal walks?

There are a few options for parking. Cosmeston Lakes Country Park has a large, well-regarded car park which is a great starting point for many circular walks. There is also parking available near The Captain's Wife pub in Swanbridge, which is convenient for accessing the causeway to Sully Island. Are there any pubs or cafes along the hiking trails?

Yes, you can easily combine a walk with a stop for refreshments. The Captain's Wife pub at Swanbridge is a popular spot located right on the coast path, perfect for a break before or after a walk to Sully Island. Additionally, the visitor centre at Cosmeston Lakes Country Park has a cafe, providing a convenient option for those exploring the park's many trails.

What kind of wildlife can I see at the Lavernock Point Nature Reserve?

The coastal grasslands are home to a variety of wildflowers, including several types of orchids, which in turn attract over 25 species of butterflies in the summer.
