Coffi a Bara

Highlight • Cafe

Coffi a Bara (translates to Coffee & Bread) is a very welcome stopping point. Owned and run by Chris & Amilee, it opened just a few months ago when the couple wanted to escape to a less frantic life away from the city. Chris is a self-taught baker, and the stopping point is a mix of bakery, patisserie and cafe with a great selection to choose from.

As you enter Tregaron, it can be easy to miss Coffi a Bara, which is located within the town car park. If you reach the centre, just turn around and its 40 metres on your right. Perfectly located and with a large courtyard area there is ample room for storing bikes. With the sun out it also makes for a good place to sit outside.

To refuel there are plenty of options, with some delicious baguettes, great coffee and some of the nicest pastries you will find, plus a few more slightly left-field options, like a Chocolate Cruffin and pastry hot dog. The bread is made fresh every day, but despite riding with a small frame bag, it wasn't quite big enough to fit a loaf inside, but I did manage to grab the very last pain au chocolat that remained.

This is a Gritfest special courtesy of local Matt Page. You're doing well if you can get up the whole thing on gravel/CX gearing; pacing is key. The climb is pretty steady, but a bit loose in parts, straight up before a few zig zags nearing the top. Do make sure you stop to take in the view of the valleys, it'll blow your mind.

Tyn y Cornel to Soar y Mynydd Pass

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

This is currently closed to vehicles (hence all the Road Closed signs!) but is passable and fun by bike. You’ll almost certainly need to hike-a-bike the part with significant flood damage in the middle but it’s some of the finest wilderness in Wales!

River Cothi Valley Road

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

This road is just blissful. Down in the flat valley bottom next to grassland floodplain and the glistening River Cothi winding by, the stretch of tarmac is both smooth and quiet, any rider's dream! We even saw two Dippers (rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/dipper/) flying over the river here, a gorgeous sight!

February 3, 2024, Tyn y Cornel to Soar y Mynydd Pass

The eastern and upper sections of this pass are mostly ridable in either direction on a gravel bike (fair play if you can scale the climb heading east to west!) but caution is advised if descending the western side, even on a mountain bike. The washout has only gotten worse since this highlight was created. It is now like a ravine – easily six feet deep or more in places. It's quite entertaining to push alongside, but I would strongly advise even confident cyclists to push as a fall would have serious consequences. For context, we rode (pushed, really) across this pass on lightly loaded gravel-adjacent road bikes in the pitch black and driving rain. As anticipated, it took around 1.5 hours to get from the chapel to the hostel. Finally, the hostel warden doesn't expect the road to be repaired by the council unless a grant or funding is secured by the green laning community. As such, ride anticipating the route to be as described here.

A great gravel climb. Well graded with the switchbacks, don't let the steep bit at the bottom put you off!
