Tre'r Ceiri is a truly spectacular hillfort dating back to the Iron Age. In English the name means 'town of the giants.' A giant of a hillfort it is too and one of the best preserved of all with stunning views across the Llŷn Peninsula. The settlement is surrounded by stone walls that are amazingly largely intact. Some of these walls are four metres high in places. Inside the fort are the remains of around 150 houses which in days gone by would have had turfed roofs. A truly amazing place to visit!

Yr Eifl 564m, is a hill summit on the Lleyn Peninsula in North Wales. On a clear day, the views from the top summit reach as far as the Isle of Man, the Wicklow mountains in Ireland and the Lake District, as well as the entire sweep of Cardigan Bay. It is listed as a UK Marilyn.

Yes, the region is well-suited for circular hikes. For a challenging day out, the Yr Eifl / Garn Ganol loop from Trefor is a popular 14.5 km route that takes in several summits. Many other loops start from nearby villages like Trefor and Llanaelhaearn itself.
For walks starting in Trefor, there is parking available in the village. If you plan to hike directly to Tre'r Ceiri, you can find parking in a dedicated car park closer to the trailhead, which is a common starting point for the ascent.
Many trails in the area are suitable for dogs, but be aware that you will be walking through farmland with livestock. It is essential to keep your dog on a lead, especially during lambing season. Always check local signage for specific restrictions.
Certainly. For a short and scenic walk with a historical point of interest, the Trefor Sea Stacks loop is an excellent choice. It's a relatively flat 3.6 km walk along the coast with impressive rock formations.
The Llŷn Peninsula offers dramatic coastal scenery. Hikes here often provide panoramic views over Caernarfon Bay and the Irish Sea. The Headland loop from Trefor is a great option for experiencing these stunning sea views along a relatively easy path.
The hillfort is called Tre'r Ceiri, which translates to 'Town of the Giants'. It's one of the best-preserved Iron Age forts in Britain, located on a summit of Yr Eifl. You can explore the remains of over 150 stone huts enclosed by impressive ramparts. The ascent from Llanaelhaearn is a direct and rewarding way to visit the site.
The difficulty varies depending on your chosen route. There are moderate trails, such as the Plateau with Views over Trefor loop, which involves a significant climb but rewards you with spectacular views without going to the highest peaks. The ascents are generally steep in places but manageable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.
Llanaelhaearn is situated on the Llŷn Peninsula, and while it is accessible, public transport options can be limited. Local bus services connect the village to larger towns like Pwllheli and Caernarfon, which have wider transport links. It's recommended to check the latest bus timetables in advance as services can be infrequent, especially on weekends.
The area is highly rated by the Komoot community. Hikers frequently praise the combination of challenging mountain ascents and beautiful coastal scenery all within a small area. The historical significance of sites like Tre'r Ceiri is also a major highlight.
There are over a dozen curated hiking routes available in the immediate area, ranging from easy coastal strolls to moderate mountain climbs. This network of trails provides plenty of options for different fitness levels and interests.
The villages on the Llŷn Peninsula, such as nearby Nefyn and Porthdinllaen, have pubs that are popular with walkers for a post-hike meal or drink. While Llanaelhaearn itself is small, these neighbouring spots offer welcoming options to relax and refuel.
