Since the area featured in House of the Dragons it has become too busy to be worth visiting most of the year. On a decent summers day the car park will be full by 10am. I'm local and now only go there in the winter . It is a lovely area , but just too crowded most of the time.

Just love this walk. You can park next to the beach but you really are missing out if you don’t walk from the main road through the woods to the beach. Check the tide times if you want to hop over onto the island to see the lighthouse. My dog loves the golden sand but check times of the year for being allowed on the beach.

Yes, the area is very accommodating for beginners and families. The terrain is mostly flat or gently rolling, especially through Newborough Forest and along the beaches. A great option is the Tŵr Mawr Lighthouse – Llanddwyn Beach loop from Pen-Lôn, which is an easy 4.6-mile (7.4 km) walk with beautiful coastal views.
Dogs are widely welcomed, especially in Newborough Forest and on many sections of the coastal path. However, be aware of seasonal restrictions on some beaches, particularly Llanddwyn Beach, to protect nesting birds. Also, keep dogs on a lead near farmland and wildlife. The Llanddwyn Beach loop from Pen-Lôn is a good dog-friendly choice, offering plenty of space.
The terrain is exceptionally varied. You can expect to walk on soft sand along Llanddwyn Bay, follow well-maintained forest tracks in Newborough Forest, and traverse grassy coastal paths. Most routes are relatively flat, but some sections of the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path can be more rugged. There are over 70 trails in the area, with the majority rated as easy or moderate.
Nearly all trails in the Rhosyr area offer fantastic sea views. The paths around Llanddwyn Island and along Llanddwyn Bay provide dramatic vistas of the Snowdonia mountain range and the Llŷn Peninsula. The Tŵr Mawr Lighthouse – Llanddwyn Island loop from Pen-Lôn is particularly rewarding for its panoramic coastal scenery.
Yes, the Rhosyr area is perfect for circular walks. Many trails are designed as loops that combine the forest, dunes, and coastline, allowing you to experience different environments in a single hike without retracing your steps. The popular Llanddwyn Island & Newborough Forest loop is a great example of a comprehensive circular route.
The main car park for accessing Newborough Forest and Llanddwyn Beach is the beach car park (Pen-Lôn), which is large but can get very busy, especially in summer. It is a pay-and-display car park. Arriving early is recommended to secure a spot. Some trailheads for walks exploring the wider area may have smaller, informal parking spots.
Accessing the main trailheads by public transport can be challenging as they are in a rural area. Bus services run to the village of Newborough (Llanfairpwllgwyngyll), but from there it is a considerable walk to the forest and beach car parks. It's best to check local bus timetables in advance as services can be infrequent.
The area is rich in history. A major highlight is Llanddwyn Island, accessible at low tide, which features the ruins of St Dwynwen's Church, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. You can also visit the remains of Llys Rhosyr, one of the courts of the medieval Welsh Princes. The Llanddwyn Beach – Tŵr Mawr Lighthouse loop from Pen-Lôn offers a great way to explore the historic lighthouses on the island.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Hikers frequently praise the unique combination of dense pine forest and expansive sandy beaches within a single walk. The stunning views towards Snowdonia and the magical atmosphere of Llanddwyn Island are also consistent highlights in reviews.
Yes, the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path runs directly through this area. A notable section is the 13-mile stretch from Llyn Rhos Ddu to Aberffraw, which showcases the region's diverse landscapes including dunes, saltmarsh, and coastal heath. You can find more information on this specific section on the Visit Anglesey website.
Llanddwyn Island is a tidal island, meaning it is cut off from the mainland during high tide. It is crucial to check the tide times before you set off to ensure you have a safe window to walk across and return. The path to the island is from Llanddwyn Beach.
