Slow down for the sharp bend and lower the gears in advance if you go towards Saddington Reservoir

It's the perfect spot to hydrate, stretch, and simply appreciate nature before continuing to ride. Beware the thorns and sticks in spring time!

Foxton can get busy so this is a great detour, but only when dry.

Saddington Tunnel, Leicestershire This is the north-west portal of Saddington Tunnel (Fleckney Tunnel) on the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section). The tunnel is not quite straight, because miscalculations during its construction required some "adjustment". The tunnel is just over half a mile long (about 807 metres). Standard seven foot beam narrowboats can pass in the tunnel, with care. There are bats in this tunnel, and a narrowboat is in it navigating towards Leicester. There is no towpath in the tunnel, so horses were led across the top of the tunnel along the path which can be seen above the tunnel entrance. source: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3655795

This slightly crooked Leicester Canal tunnel was constructed in 1797 and is 808 metres long and available for two way working for boats of 3.96 metres or less beam and maximum of 2.13 metres high. The tunnel does not have an internal towpath - if walking or cycling along the Leicester Canal's towpath then follow the marked route which goes up and over the hillside directly following the tunnel's subterranean route. Saddington Feeder Arm connects the Leicester Canal with Saddington Reservoir - fed by water from Saddington and Laughton Brooks, the reservoir was constructed in the 1790s as a water source for the canal. source: http://www.grandunioncanal.co.uk/Saddington-Tunnel.html

Gumley is a quaint village featuring the historic Saint Helen's Church, a Grade II listed building. The village is also notable for Gumley Hall, a historic estate with a tall clock tower, adding character to this rural village.

The basin marks the convergence point of the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal and the Market Harborough arm, situated at the base of Foxton Locks. Foxton Locks is the 'staircase' of ten canal locks. This flight of locks was built in the early 19th century to enable canal boats to navigate the steep incline. The locks are arranged in two groups of five, allowing boats to ascend or descend the hill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there many circular walks starting from Kibworth Harcourt?

Yes, the area is well-suited for circular walks. The network of footpaths and bridleways connects to the Grand Union Canal towpath and surrounding villages, creating numerous opportunities for loop hikes. You can find routes of varying lengths, from short village strolls to more substantial countryside treks.

What are the best options for a family-friendly walk?

For families, the flatter sections along the Grand Union Canal are a great choice. These towpaths are generally easy to navigate and offer plenty of wildlife to see. The Binleys Bridge (Bridge 67) – Bridge 68, Grand Union Canal loop from Kibworth Cricket Club is a good example of a relatively flat canal-side walk. For a day out with more activities, Windmill Farm Park and Bradgate Park are popular local spots with dedicated paths and play areas.

Can I take my dog on the hiking trails?

Most of the public footpaths around Kibworth Harcourt are suitable for walking with a dog, but they should be kept on a lead, especially when crossing farmland with livestock. The towpath of the Grand Union Canal is a popular spot for dog walkers. For a dedicated off-lead area, Sence Valley Forest Park is a well-regarded, dog-friendly park with numerous trails.

Are there any walks that include a pub or café stop?

Many walks in the area pass through villages with traditional pubs and cafes. The villages of Kibworth, Smeeton Westerby, and Tur Langton all have establishments where you can stop for refreshments. Planning a route that loops through one of these villages is a great way to include a break.

How can I walk to Foxton Locks from the Kibworth area?

Foxton Locks is a popular destination and can be reached via the Grand Union Canal towpath. You can start a walk from nearby villages like Smeeton Westerby or Gumley. The routes follow the canal, offering a scenic and relatively flat path directly to the famous staircase of locks.

Where can I find parking for a walk near Kibworth Harcourt?

Parking is typically available in the villages, but it's best to use designated public car parks where possible to be considerate of residents. Some popular walking spots like Foxton Locks and Bradgate Park have their own pay-and-display car parks. For other routes, walkers often find on-street parking in villages like Smeeton Westerby or Tur Langton to start their hike.

What is the terrain like on the hikes around Kibworth Harcourt?

The landscape consists of gently rolling hills, open farmland, and flat canal towpaths. Most trails are on unpaved footpaths, which can become muddy after rain. Elevation changes are generally modest, making the area accessible to most fitness levels. You'll encounter a classic English countryside of fields, hedgerows, and quiet country lanes.

Are there any longer, more challenging hikes available?

While the area is known for moderate walks, you can create longer hikes by linking several routes together. For example, combining a section of the Grand Union Canal with a loop through Tur Langton and Smeeton Westerby can create a walk of 10 miles or more. The Smeeton Hill loop from Smeeton Westerby offers a bit more elevation gain than the canal walks.

What kind of wildlife might I see while hiking?

The canal and Saddington Reservoir are hotspots for wildlife. Keep an eye out for water birds like herons, swans, and kingfishers along the Grand Union Canal. The surrounding fields and woodlands are home to common British wildlife, and local nature groups have reported sightings of various birds of prey, damselflies, and newts in the area.

Are there any historical trails in the area?

Yes, Kibworth has a rich history and there are designated 'Heritage Trails' that guide you past notable local landmarks. These walks highlight the area's history, which includes 17 listed buildings and connections to Anglo-Saxon and Viking times. The Kibworth Harcourt Windmill is a key feature on these historical routes.
