"Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what motivated people to erect "their" cross at this spot. (...) These wayside crosses were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and aims to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who has overcome death (...). The cross is a part of our lives, just as it was a part of the life of Jesus. So I hope that many people... will seek out the wayside crosses, whether as places of silence and respite before God, or as places of community gathering, prayer, and praise." Glorious views across Rosedale from this point on the northern side of Spaunton Moor. Disused railway track provides ideal surface for hiking, running and biking, very easy going with minimal gradient.

Photographer @Jessica Mather had the misfortune of not being able to enjoy the view offered by the ANA CROSS site during her run here due to the weather conditions. However, more than two dozen photos of the small sacred monument and the panorama offered by the prominent location can be seen on the hiking highlight of the same name =>> https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/2252418

A popular option that connects two picturesque villages is the Hutton-le-Hole village – Hutton-le-Hole village loop from Lastingham. This moderate walk is about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) and takes you through a lovely mix of field paths and quiet country lanes.
The area around Hob Hole Beck offers serene spots perfect for picnics and is a great starting point for more leisurely scenic walks suitable for families. The paths connecting villages like Hutton-le-Hole often have gentler sections as well.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails. However, you'll be crossing open moorland where sheep and ground-nesting birds are common, so it's essential to keep your dog on a lead, especially between April and July. Always check for local signage regarding canine access.
For walks heading towards Ana Cross and the moors, there are a couple of small, well-regarded parking areas directly off the road near Rosedale. One is located at Bank Top Kilns, and another is situated opposite the main path leading to the cross, providing convenient access to the trails.
Accessing the trailheads directly by public transport can be challenging as Spaunton is a small village. The most common approach is to take a bus to a larger nearby village like Hutton-le-Hole or Pickering and then start your hike from there or arrange for a local taxi.
Yes, you can hike to the Mallyan Spout Waterfall near Goathland. While not starting directly in Spaunton, it's a rewarding destination in the wider region. The walk to the waterfall is known for its steep sections and rocky paths leading down to the beautiful cascade.
The Ana Cross is a historic 10-foot tall stone cross that serves as a prominent landmark on Spaunton Moor. It's a popular destination for hikers. You can see it on the Ironstone Industry & Ana Cross loop from Rosedale Abbey, which also explores the area's industrial past.
For those seeking a more strenuous day out, the Hamer House and Cropton Forest loop from Rosedale Abbey is an excellent choice. This difficult trail is over 12 miles (19 km) long and involves significant elevation gain, taking you through varied terrain including dense forest and open moorland.

The Lastingham to Appleton-le-Moors loop is a great option. At 8.7 miles (14 km), this moderate route offers a substantial walk through the rolling North Yorkshire countryside, typically taking just under 4 hours to complete.
