Knaresborough Viaduct is a viaduct in the North Yorkshire town of Knaresborough, England. The viaduct carries the Harrogate line over the River Nidd in the town. The viaduct was supposed to have opened in 1848, but the first construction collapsed into the river very near to completion, which necessitated a new viaduct and delayed the opening of the line through Knaresborough by three years.

I went on this walk and probably wouldn’t do it again. There are a couple of stiles you need to lift your dog over. The first farm I came across had an u n friendly German shepherd dog and was aggressive towards my dog. I was walking alone so not a pleasant experience. The next farm was the most unkempt farm I have seen. There was cattle wandering in the junk farm yard amongst abandoned cars and other white goods. The mud was awful and the whole place was very downtrodden and bleak. I would not recommend this walk.

Yes, many trails in the area are suitable for walking with dogs. The paths through open countryside and along the River Nidd offer great exercise. However, you'll likely cross agricultural fields with livestock, so it's essential to keep your dog on a lead and under control in these sections.
The region is excellent for circular hikes, meaning you can start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. For a moderate route that connects two villages, consider the Spofforth to Kirk Deighton loop. It's a 6.2-mile (9.9 km) walk primarily through open fields with very little elevation change.
Absolutely. The area's gentle terrain is ideal for family outings. A great option is the Knaresborough Viaduct – Saint Robert's Cave loop from Hookstone. It's a relatively flat 4.7-mile (7.6 km) walk with scenic riverside paths that are engaging for all ages.
Yes, the area is rich in history. Several routes pass near significant landmarks. For instance, you can find walks that offer views of the historic Ribston Hall, a 17th-century country house with a Knights Templar chapel. The nearby Nidd Viaduct, now part of the Nidderdale Greenway, is another historical structure you can walk across.
Walks along the River Nidd are typically tranquil and scenic. The paths follow the meandering river through peaceful valleys and woodlands. It's a great area for wildlife spotting, with kingfishers and green woodpeckers often seen. The nearby Nidd Gorge offers more dramatic scenery with its steep, wooded valley sides.
Yes, if you're looking for a full day of hiking, there are several longer routes. The Knaresborough Round from Plumpton Rocks loop is a challenging 17.9-mile (28.9 km) trail that provides a comprehensive tour of the wider landscape.
Parking availability depends on your chosen trailhead. For walks starting in villages like Spofforth or Knaresborough, you can often find street parking or small public car parks. For example, the Wetherby Railway Path has a small car park near the children's play area in Spofforth, which is a convenient starting point.

Another excellent option is Hetchell Wood Nature Reserve, known for its ancient woodland, rocky crags, and beautiful displays of wild garlic and bluebells in the spring.
The terrain is generally gentle, featuring rolling hills, flat riverside paths, and tracks across open farmland. Most routes have minimal elevation gain. Some paths, particularly in areas like Nidd Gorge, can be narrower and more rugged with steps and boardwalks, but the majority of trails are on well-surfaced paths and bridleways.
