Lots of bridges criss-crossing becks and culverts just here - this is but one of at least six that I counted. And this is where the track that it carries ends. There is a public footpath marked on the Ordnance Survey map running all the way up the north side of Straight Stean Beck but good luck finding it. The route from here up Meugher is entirely cross-country.

Useful bench on the east side of the hut, nice to sit and take a break. The hut was unlocked when I passed by in June 2026, so you could in theory shelter from a passing squall (but if the weather is that bad why are you on the hills and not in the pub!)

Typical Nidderdale upland with Gritstone moorland, heather plateaux and peat accumulation on poorly drained tops. Described as the remotest and least-inviting summit in the Dales, as Wandering Cloud states, the terrain does not make for easy footing. You will need waterproof footwear (even in summer) and flexible ankles. Easiest way to get up Meugher to experience these views is from the bridleway to the south. There is a barely discernible ATV track leading part way to the summit.

A victory memorial, not a roll of honour, hence it lists key WW1 dates and not names. It was originally a drinking fountain and was repurposed as a memorial in 1920.
