Thornton Force waterfall

Highlight β€’ Natural Monument

Dropping 46 feet (14 m) over a limestone cliff, Thornton Force will take your breath away when it comes into view. Interestingly, there are several layers to the rock behind the falls and it's possible to measure over 170 million years of geological evolution within the span of one hand.

However, if you are at Thornton Force when the weather is fine, you might be more interested in embracing the water for a refreshing dip and basking in the rocky amphitheatre where it's located. During peak times it can get busy here, so choose your moment to visit.

Trow Gill

Highlight β€’ Natural Monument

Myself and a friend walked this route recently. We arrived at Trow Gill and uttered the words: "Wow, it's like being on Skull Island in King Kong!" A good place to get the kids learning to use their hands as well as their feet.

Cross of Greet Climb from Slaidburn

Highlight (Segment) β€’ Viewpoint

Possibly our favourite climb in the Cold Dark North - beautiful bathed in sunshine brutal on a wet and windy day - it's never very steep but always testing and rewards you with a brilliant descent down to Tatham Fell and Bentham to the North

Devil's Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale

Highlight β€’ Historical Site

Nice views. Apparently, there is no record of it ever been built - so it was assumed the Devil built it πŸ™ƒ. We used to jump off it in younger days, there are now 'bylaw' signs which prohibit it. There is also a burger van if you fancy something to eat or a brew. Massively popular with motorbikers on weekends and in good weather. Free car park opposite from which to start your ride.

Thornton Force is the last waterfall on the River Twiss going upriver. For me it was the most impressive waterfall on the Ingleton Waterfalls trai with its 46 ft drop and (at least when we were there) its very impressive flow over the edge and the force of the water landing at the bottom.

Very impressive narrow gorge

Perhaps the most impressive of all the falls on the trail and really worth a visit. However, the whole trail is likely to be very busy so don't expect to be alone, and try to come midweek if you don't want to end up in traffic jams of walkers
