David Howells
April 15, 2026, Castle Carrock Reservoir

Castle Carrock Reservoir is a 43-acre, active reservoir that supplies drinking water to the city of Carlisle. It was completed in 1909. It is a beautiful area sitting just south of Castle Carrock village. It is nestled in woodland and has a scenic, popular 2-mile walking loop around its edges. Though the path can get boggy, the views out across the water provide a peaceful and tranquil ambience.

One of two pubs in the village. This is more of a drinkers pub rather than The Featherstone Arms which does great food.

November 16, 2024, Hartside Summit Viewpoint

Hartside Cross is the summit of the A686 between Penrith and Alston. It reaches 1,886 feet (575m) with great views because of the scrubby moorland.

Before you reach the tarmac road you have to drag, push, pull, lift the bike through difficult, uneven surfaces along the side of the stream. There are dangerous sections within the trail adjacent to the river just before reaching this bridge area

It is wet here, soggy surfaces mean the bike slows down and sometimes come to a standstill. Summer weather would be easier. You are in the clouds in these elevated areas

This section is tough to get through, the surface was very wet, traction and moving becomes difficult, you might have to push the bike up hill, it is quite steep. Weather conditions can be adverse in this location
