This site used to be one of the deepest Cole mines in the country, reaching over 250 feet (76 m) below the surface. Once the mines closed the area was rejuvenated and rewilded with the lake, wetland, grasslands and woods creating a diverse habitat for many species of flora and fauna. There are several trails, a children's playground, café and visitor centre.

September 18, 2024, Cold Hiendley Reservoir

Cold Hiendley Reservoir was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century to supply water to the growing city of Wakefield. The dam had to be strengthened in 1990. This is a popular fishing reservoir with large carp. There is a nice trail around the edge and the Trans Pennine Trail follows the Barnsley Canal path past the dam.

Are the walks around Wintersett suitable for dogs?

Yes, the area is very dog-friendly. The wide, open spaces of the country parks and the waterside paths around the reservoirs offer great environments for walking with dogs. Many trails, like the loop around Cold Hiendley Reservoir and Anglers Country Park Lake, are ideal. However, always be mindful of wildlife and keep dogs under control, especially near the reservoir reed beds.

What is the best time of year to hike in Wintersett?

Wintersett is a year-round hiking destination. Spring is particularly beautiful when the bluebells bloom in the nearby woodlands. Summer offers long days perfect for waterside picnics, while autumn provides stunning colours in Haw Park Wood. Winter walks can be crisp and clear, but be prepared for some paths to be muddy, especially after rain.

Are there any easy, circular walks available?

The region specializes in easy, circular routes. The terrain is mostly flat, making it accessible for most fitness levels. A great example is the The Wild Wood – Haw Park Woods loop from Wintersett, which is a gentle 5.7 km walk through beautiful, well-maintained woodland paths.

Are the trails accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs?

Many of the main paths, particularly around Anglers Country Park lake, are well-maintained and surfaced, making them suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. The two-mile lakeside path at the park is a popular, accessible option. Some woodland trails may be uneven or muddy, so it's best to stick to the main country park routes for guaranteed accessibility.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see?

The reservoirs and wetlands are a haven for birdwatchers. Look for species like the great crested grebe, tufted duck, and other waterfowl in and around the reed beds. The woodlands, such as Haw Park Wood, are home to a variety of woodland birds and other creatures. The entire area has been transformed from its industrial past into a rich habitat for wildlife.

Are there any longer, more challenging hikes?

While most trails are easy, you can combine paths for a longer day of hiking. For a more substantial walk, consider the Nostell Priory Lower Lake – Anglers Country Park Lake loop. This 11.5 km route connects several key landmarks and offers a more varied experience through parkland and alongside different bodies of water.

Are there any pubs or cafes on the walking routes?

The main hub for refreshments is the visitor centre at Anglers Country Park, which has a café. While there are no pubs directly on the reservoir paths, the nearby villages of Walton and Crofton have options a short drive away. It's a good idea to pack your own drinks and snacks for the trail itself.

What is the 'Room on the Broom Trail'?

The 'Room on the Broom Trail' is a family-focused activity located within Anglers Country Park. Inspired by the popular children's book by Julia Donaldson, it's an interactive trail designed to keep younger explorers engaged with sculptures and activities along the main lakeside path.

What are the trail conditions like in Haw Park Wood?
