Take advantage of the view - there aren't that many viewpoints of the castle.

Tough pull up from the RSPB centre, especially with the East Lomond Puirin hill climb already in the legs and gravel gearing. But so worth it.

Still tricky to get bikes across the reservoir as the larger gate at one end is padlocked & the smaller gate is too small to push an adult bike through up on its rear wheel. The fence alongside had been “lowered” & we lifted our bikes over between us (heavy e-bikes with panniers). Care was needed in doing so as it’s a narrow grassy verge with water below. Wouldn’t have managed this had I been cycling solo.

Pleasant walk along heritage trail and sitting outside at Loch Leven’s Larder with a coffee a nice cake, sets you up for the return journey.

Beautiful hike. Pretty steep at the start, but well worth the effort. From hills to open fields to heather and forest, this route has it all.

Yes, there are over 35 signed hiking routes in the Portmoak area. These range from easy loch-side strolls to challenging hill climbs in the Lomond Hills, offering plenty of options for all fitness levels.
The trails around Portmoak are highly rated by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the stunning panoramic views from the top of Bishop Hill and the peaceful, well-maintained paths of the Loch Leven Heritage Trail. The variety, from rugged hills to serene loch-side walks, is a frequently mentioned highlight.
Absolutely. The area around Loch Leven offers several gentle, flat paths perfect for families. A great option is the Old Stone Chapel – Kirkgate Park loop from Glenlomond, which follows the loch shore. Additionally, the surfaced paths through Portmoak Moss provide an easy and fascinating walk for all ages to explore a unique bog habitat.
For a more strenuous day out, the Lochore Meadows Beach – Loch Ore loop from Ballingry offers a difficult-rated hike with significant elevation gain. This long route provides a rewarding challenge with expansive views across the landscape.
There are several small car parks that serve as popular starting points for Bishop Hill. The village of Scotlandwell is a common trailhead, and there is also parking available near Kinnesswood. These can fill up quickly, especially on weekends, so arriving early is recommended.
Yes, the area is accessible by bus. Services run to villages like Kinnesswood and Scotlandwell, which are excellent starting points for walks up Bishop Hill and along the Michael Bruce Way. Check local bus timetables for the most current routes and schedules.
Dogs are generally welcome on most trails, but it's essential to keep them under control. Around Loch Leven, which is a National Nature Reserve, and in areas with livestock, dogs must be kept on a lead, especially during bird breeding and lambing seasons (typically spring and early summer).
Hiking is possible year-round, but late spring through early autumn (May to September) offers the best conditions with longer daylight hours and generally better weather for enjoying the views. The hills can be beautiful in winter, but require appropriate gear and experience to handle potentially icy and snowy paths.
Facilities are concentrated around the Loch Leven Heritage Trail. You'll find toilets and cafes at access points like the RSPB Loch Leven visitor centre and near Kinross. Trailheads for more remote hill walks, such as those for Bishop Hill, typically do not have public facilities, so it's best to plan accordingly.
The Michael Bruce Way is a 4-kilometer waymarked circular trail connecting Scotlandwell and Kinnesswood. It celebrates the 18th-century poet Michael Bruce, who drew inspiration from the local landscape. The path crosses Portmoak Moss and offers wonderful views of Loch Leven, with plaques featuring his poetry along the route.
Most routes up Bishop Hill are graded as moderate. They involve a steady and sometimes steep ascent on grassy or rocky paths. While it requires a reasonable level of fitness, the climb is manageable for most regular walkers and the panoramic views from the summit are a fantastic reward for the effort.
The area is rich in wildlife. The Loch Leven National Nature Reserve is a haven for birds, including ospreys in summer and thousands of migratory wildfowl in autumn. In Portmoak Moss and the surrounding woodlands, you might spot red squirrels, roe deer, and various butterflies and dragonflies.
