Amazing location. When I stayed there were 6 of us crammed in together. In a pinch an additional 2 could have gone under the bench (max)

The Ryvoan Bothy is an authentic and, above all, small bothy. Because it's also relatively close to a large parking lot and visitor center for Glenmore Forest Park, and the path to it is easy to walk and cycle, it's likely to be crowded. Therefore, it wasn't my favorite during my cycling trip through the Cairngorms, but it does offer excellent accommodations with a few sleeping places, a table and chairs, and a stove.

This is an emergency refuge so it is requested that there are no planned stays here. and its really tiny.. If crossing the Lairig Ghru from the north in the wet seasons then worth making a decision at glen more or linn of dee before committing as it can get a little wet, cold and nerve testing in the colder months if in spate..

Great little bothy! Just to know there's no signal here at all.

Glenlivet offers a diverse range of accommodations, from traditional, basic mountain bothies like Ryvoan Bothy and Bob Scott's Bothy, to more comfortable glamping pods such as Wigwam Holidays Glenlivet, and self-catering holiday cottages like Glenlivet Cottages at Minmore House. You can choose based on your desired level of comfort and adventure.
For those new to bothy experiences, Ryvoan Bothy is often considered a good starting point due to its relatively easy access from Glen More. It provides a classic bothy experience without being overly remote or challenging to reach.
When visiting a traditional bothy, you should bring all your own supplies, including a sleeping bag, food, cooking equipment, and a torch or candles as there is no electricity. For bothies with stoves, like Bob Scott's Bothy, it's recommended to bring coal, as collecting wood from the estate is often discouraged or prohibited.
Yes, for families seeking more comfort than a traditional bothy, Wigwam Holidays Glenlivet offers family-friendly Wigwams that can sleep up to four people, with some being pet-friendly. These often include en-suite wet rooms and kitchenettes, providing a comfortable base for exploring the area.
The Glenlivet area, within the Cairngorms National Park, offers numerous outdoor activities. You can explore a variety of hiking trails, including easy routes like the George Smith Smugglers Trail. For cyclists, there are extensive cycling routes and dedicated MTB trails, such as the Glenlivet Trail Centre loop.
While traditional bothies generally operate on a 'leave no trace' principle and welcome well-behaved dogs, it's always best to check specific bothy guidelines or the Mountain Bothies Association code. For more structured dog-friendly accommodation, some glamping options like Wigwam Holidays Glenlivet offer pet-friendly Wigwams.
The huts in Glenlivet are nestled within the Cairngorms National Park, offering stunning natural landscapes. You can expect to see rolling hills, rivers like the Avon and Livet, and forests. Areas around bothies like Ryvoan Bothy are often RSPB nature reserves, providing opportunities for wildlife spotting. The Dell at Glenlivet also boasts views of these natural features and is within an international dark skies park, perfect for stargazing.
Yes, the Glenlivet area is rich in history. Glenlivet Cottages at Minmore House are located near the former home of The Glenlivet distillery founder, George Smith, offering a base to explore the famous whisky trail. You can also find historic farmhouses, and the wider region has castles and other heritage sites.
The best time to visit depends on your preferred activity. Summer and early autumn offer the most favorable weather for hiking and outdoor activities. However, for a truly wild and atmospheric experience, some visitors enjoy the challenge of winter, though access to bothies can be more difficult and requires appropriate gear and experience.
Access to bothies often involves a walk from the nearest parking. For example, Ryvoan Bothy is a few miles from a parking area. For glamping pods and holiday cottages, dedicated parking is typically provided on-site. Always plan your route and check for specific parking information before heading out.
Yes, the Fords of Avon Refuge is a simple, basic shelter primarily intended for emergency use rather than overnight stays. It's located on the north side of the River Avon and provides a safe haven in challenging conditions.
Corrour Bothy is dramatically located beneath the Devil's Point and is one of the most photographed shelters in the Scottish Highlands. It serves as a vital respite for hikers tackling the Lairig Ghru, a major mountain pass, and offers access to four of Britain's five highest summits, making it an excellent base for challenging adventures.
