Lews Castle is a very impressive former stately home that now boasts function rooms, a cafe and accommodation too. Designed by architect Charles Wilson, the building dates back to 1851. The modern annex is the Museum nan Eilean Stornoway, where you can learn more about the archipelago's rich culture.

A tip doesn't get any better if you keep writing the same words for about 40 "highlights" and add a lot of wrong pictures.

The castle is now a hotel/holiday apartments, so you CANNOT tour it in its entirety! Non-residents, however, have access to the ground floor during the café's opening hours. Storehouse Cafe - Lews Castle https://share.google/fTN7Xzmct2DlACoXl Also located here is the highly recommended Museum & Tasglann nan Eilean https://share.google/hN2uyRJPYXvdC3RT3 Currently featuring 6 "Lewis Chessman" pieces as a special exhibition, highly recommended! There's also a souvenir shop with lots of Harris Tweed (prices like everywhere else), and you can admire the ballroom from the outside. That's it - I still found it extremely worthwhile!

You cross the Carloway Stone Bridge: a sturdy 19th-century remnant, no longer a major function, but a dignified support for the old A858. Its heritage is so significant that it has been protected as a Category B monument since 1993.

Coastal sections like Barvas Beach and Brue Shore offer opportunities to ride near rocky outcrops and large boulders. The wider Isle of Lewis also features peat bogs and lunar hillsides, contributing to a wild and adventurous biking environment.
The trails in this region cater to different skill levels. You'll find one easy route, the Lews Castle Grounds Trail, which is great for a more relaxed ride. The majority of routes, such as the Stornoway to Arnol Blackhouse loop via Penthouse Road and the Pentland Road Trail, are rated as moderate, offering a good challenge for experienced riders seeking longer distances and varied surfaces.
Yes, for families or those seeking an easier ride, the Lews Castle Grounds Trail is an excellent option. Located near Stornoway, approximately 21 kilometers from Barvas and Brue, it offers a more structured biking experience with cycle paths and scenic routes suitable for various ages and abilities.
The best time for mountain biking in Barvas and Brue is generally during the warmer, drier months, typically from late spring to early autumn (May to September). During this period, you're more likely to encounter favorable weather conditions, less boggy terrain, and longer daylight hours, making for a more enjoyable and safer experience on the exposed moorland and coastal tracks.
While riding, you can encounter a mix of natural beauty and historical sites. The expansive Mointeach Barabhais (Barvas Moor) offers a sense of vastness, and coastal routes provide dramatic views of Barvas Beach and Brue Shore. Further afield, near Stornoway, you can explore the historic Lews Castle and its grounds, or pass by the Stornoway Town Hall on some routes.
Yes, several routes offer a circular experience. For example, the Stornoway to Arnol Blackhouse loop via Penthouse Road is a moderate, longer loop that takes you through diverse landscapes. Another option is the Lews Castle – Lochs of Mòinteach Leòdhais loop from Stornoway, offering a substantial ride around the area's natural features.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars. The diverse terrain, from rough tracks to more structured paths, also contributes to a memorable ride.
While public transport options exist on the Isle of Lewis, carrying bikes can be challenging. Local bus services may have limited space for bicycles, especially during peak times. It's advisable to check with the specific bus operator in advance regarding their bike carriage policy. For more flexibility, a car with a bike rack is often the most convenient option for reaching trailheads.
Parking availability can vary depending on the specific trailhead. For routes starting or passing through more populated areas like Stornoway, designated parking facilities are generally available. For more remote routes that utilize rough tracks or moorland access points, parking might be less formal, often involving roadside pull-ins. Always ensure you park responsibly and do not obstruct local access or private land.
Barvas and Brue itself is a smaller, more rural area, so amenities are limited directly on the trails. However, you will find cafes, pubs, and other services in larger settlements like Stornoway, which is a common starting point or destination for many routes, including the Stornoway Town Hall – Lews Castle loop. It's always a good idea to carry sufficient water and snacks, especially on longer, more remote rides.
Many of the trails in the Barvas and Brue area traverse open moorland and coastal paths, which are often used for crofting and may have livestock. While dogs are generally welcome, it is crucial to keep them under strict control, preferably on a lead, to protect livestock and ground-nesting birds, especially during lambing season (spring) and bird breeding season. Always follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
