Not as sharp and pointy as it's neighbour, but still a fine mountain.

This video beautifully shows the hike from Shiel Bridge / Morvich: https://youtu.be/d9XpcOD_1cA?si=HhoWZE32uExDnRp2&t=380

If you walk to the falls from Morvich then it's a good walk along pretty decent paths. If, on the other hand, you approach from the other side from Glen Elchaig, be aware that there is not only a stiff ascent but also a walk on a very narrow path along the edge of the ravine. This is not for the fainthearted or the less than sure of foot.

The Cluanie Inn is a hotel near the Isle of Skye, in the beautiful valley of Glen Shiel in Scotland. The hotel is housed in a historic inn that has been renovated with a mix of traditional and modern touches. The hotel also has its own brewery, the Cuillin Brewery, which produces local beer from the fresh water of the surrounding Cuillin mountains. The hotel also has a bar with over 400 malt whiskeys from every corner of Scotland for you to taste or purchase.

November 15, 2023, View of Glen Shiel

The Glen Shiel valley is crossed by the A87 road, which reaches a peak of 271 meters two kilometers west of the Cluanie Inn. There are several parking lots and viewpoints along the way, where you can enjoy views of the mountains and the Shiel River. You can also walk along the old military road, which runs parallel to the A87, and was built between 1750 and 1784 by William Caulfeild, General Wade's successor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dogs allowed on the trails around Loch Duich?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on trails in the Scottish Highlands, but they should be kept under close control, especially near livestock. For a pleasant walk with your dog, consider one of the less strenuous loch-side paths. Always be prepared for rugged terrain and ensure your dog is capable of the hike.

Are there any hikes that lead to a significant waterfall?

Yes, the area is home to the spectacular Falls of Glomach, one of Scotland's highest waterfalls. You can reach them via the challenging Morvich to Falls of Glomach loop. This is a long and remote hike, so be sure to go well-prepared for a full day in the hills.

What are the options for easier, family-friendly walks?

While the region is known for its challenging Munros, there are several easier walks available. Look for gentle paths along the loch shores which offer beautiful scenery without significant climbs. A popular choice is the short circular walk at Tulach Ard, which provides stunning views for relatively little effort.

How difficult are the hikes in the Loch Duich area?

The trails range widely in difficulty. You'll find everything from gentle loch-side strolls to some of Scotland's most demanding mountain scrambles. The majority of the routes are rated as moderate or difficult, often involving significant elevation gain and rugged terrain. It's essential to check the difficulty of a specific route before you set out.

What is the best way to get to the trailheads? Is parking available?

Most hikers drive to the trailheads. Key starting points like Shiel Bridge, Morvich, and the Cluanie Inn have parking areas, but they can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during peak season. It's always a good idea to arrive early to secure a spot. Some routes may start from smaller, less formal lay-bys.

Can I reach the hiking trails using public transport?

Accessing trailheads by public transport can be challenging due to the area's remote nature. Bus services run along the main roads, such as the A87 through Glen Shiel, which can get you close to starts for routes like the Five Sisters. However, services may be infrequent, so it's crucial to check timetables in advance and plan your hike accordingly.

Are there any circular walks with good views of Eilean Donan Castle?

Yes, the area around Dornie offers several vantage points for the iconic Eilean Donan Castle. While many routes focus on the high peaks, you can find shorter loops and coastal paths that provide fantastic photographic opportunities of the castle set against its dramatic loch and mountain backdrop.

What kind of wildlife might I see while hiking?

The Loch Duich area is a haven for wildlife. Keep an eye out for red deer on the hillsides and golden eagles soaring above the ridges. Along the loch shores and in the quieter glens, you might be lucky enough to spot otters, pine martens, and seals. The marine environment is also a designated conservation area.

What do other hikers enjoy most about the trails around Loch Duich?

The trails here are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.7 stars. Hikers frequently praise the dramatic and rugged landscapes, the rewarding panoramic views from the summits, and the sense of remoteness. The challenging nature of the mountain ridges is often cited as a major highlight for experienced walkers.

How many hiking trails are there to choose from in this area?

There are over 30 curated hiking routes around Loch Duich on komoot. These range from strenuous multi-peak ridge walks and Munro bagging expeditions to more moderate Corbett climbs and low-level forest trails, offering a wide variety of options for different abilities and interests.

Are there any moderate ascents that still offer great views?

Absolutely. You don't have to climb a Munro to get a stunning panorama. The Sgurr an Airgid loop is a fantastic moderate option. This steady climb up a Corbett (a Scottish hill between 2,500–3,000 feet) rewards you with expansive views over Loch Duich and towards the Isle of Skye.

I'm an experienced hiker looking for a classic ridge walk. What do you suggest?

For a truly classic and challenging day out, the hike to The Saddle via the Forcan Ridge is an unforgettable experience. It's a renowned Grade 2 scramble that requires a good head for heights and scrambling skills, offering some of the most dramatic views in Kintail.
