Tips from the Community

Karsten
October 10, 2026, Dingwall Museum

The history of Dingwall Museum began with the Town Council, who in the 18th century started collecting historical artefacts and recording them in minutes. The collections, displayed in the council chamber and the clock tower, included portraits and clothing of the town's Provosts, local archaeological and natural history finds, and items relating to military heroes. In 1975, Scottish town councils were dissolved by an Act of Parliament; the council's original collections then passed into the hands of a group of dedicated locals – marking the start of the history of Dingwall Museum and the Dingwall Museum Trust. Originally housed in three interconnected rooms on the upper floor of the Dingwall Town House, the museum had expanded to include five rooms on the ground floor and the council chamber by the 1980s; additionally, the adjacent "Eagle Court" was transformed into a garden with seating. Today's exhibits include a display about the local "4th Seaforth Highlanders" regiment, a replica of "Gordon's Smiddy" forge (which operated for three generations in the town centre), and the council chamber, set up as it was used before 1975.
