Tips from the Community

An Argentona
August 30, 2026, Achmelvich Beach

You arrive via a narrow, single-lane asphalt road. There is camping for tents, but little else; it is also a very exposed area and can be quite windy. A few kilometers away, you will find more services and another campsite. As a curiosity, hidden on a promontory next to the beach is Hermit’s Castle, considered one of the smallest castles in Europe: a tiny concrete structure built in 1950 by the architect David Scott, who abandoned it shortly after finishing it. The area is also geologically extraordinary: the rocks surrounding the beach are nearly 3 billion years old, some of the oldest in Europe. I have not found any specific shipwrecks or battles well-documented on this beach that are worth adding as a historical fact.

The name comes from the Gaelic Clach Toll, "pierced rock", due to an ancient natural stone arch. Just behind it is the campsite, where guests can use kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, wetsuits and beach equipment free of charge. Nearby are also the remains of an old salmon fishing station, active until 1994.

White sand on some of Europe's oldest rocks. Achmelvich stands out for its turquoise waters and its sand, largely formed from tiny shell fragments. The rocks surrounding the bay are Lewisian gneiss, around 3 billion years old. If you walk across the headland to the north, you will find smaller, much more hidden and tranquil coves.

A great beach to enjoy the northwest of Scotland. Nearby there is a beach car park (charges) and toilets. A short boardwalk path takes you down to the beach.
