The Warnow breakthrough valley is an approximately 80-hectare nature reserve with beautiful, narrow hiking trails and romantic wooden bridges. A real gem at the confluence of the Mildenitz and Warnow. Paddlers also appreciate the area, because the Warnow is the only whitewater river in northern Germany in some places.

Dobbertin Monastery

Highlight • Religious Site

A unique gem in Mecklenburg is the Dobbertin Monastery with its double-towered church, which was built based on a Schinkel model.

The former monastery, founded in 1220 by the Benedictines, housed nuns from 1237 onwards. In 1572 it was converted into a noble women's convent. In 1857 the completion of the church reconstruction by G. A. Demmler based on plans by Schinkel was celebrated.

Since 1960, mentally handicapped and mentally ill people have been cared for in the historic buildings. In 1991 the Diakoniewerk took over the sponsorship.

Today the listed area is also a popular meeting place for day trippers and art lovers. From May to September, guided tours of the monastery grounds take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 3 p.m. An educational trail leads through the park adjacent to the monastery, which has some dendrological treasures.

In the monastery café with a view of the lake you can treat yourself to coffee, cake, ice cream or a small snack. In the workshops, visitors can get an idea of the work of the residents.

Dobbertin is a very pretty brick half-timbered village, dominated by its large monastery on the shore of the lake. This monastery, once enormously wealthy (25,000 hectares of property! That means all the surrounding villages, forests, fields,...! One of the largest and richest businesses in Mecklenburg until it was dissolved in 1918), is now a home and job opportunity for disabled people. Perhaps a little remote, but quiet and a world of its own.

The story in brief: The glacier of the Ice Age came from Scandinavia, big, thick and fat (you can hardly imagine how fat it was!), pushed everything in front of it that stood in its way, and came to a standstill 16,000 years ago. The ice that melted flowed forward (i.e. south) and collected in large lakes. When it got warmer (15,000 years ago), the glacier crumbled and melted; the meltwater continued to flow forward (south) in channels, collected... and at some point (11,000 years ago) there was no glacier left, the surface was smooth and also lower, the direction of flow in the channels reversed... and the Warnow deepened the channel by pushing up hills (terminal moraine). Sure, everyone knows that. But seeing all this live, with a 30-40m difference in height between the chain of hills and the Warnow bed, with this story in mind, is a different matter, namely very impressive.

In 1871, the well-known architect Martin Haller (who built the Hamburg town hall, among other things) built the manor house in the classical style for Johannes Hillmann. It was the center of a fairly large estate (513 hectares). After the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was a hotel for a few years; it is now privately owned.
