The Ice House was built in 1852 and was used to store locally caught salmon. To provide insulation, layers of heather and straw were packed around the ice, creating a rather ingenious deep freeze.

A very impressive view (after a steep hike up!) of the Firth of Tay in one direction and past Balmullo Quarry and to the hills to the south-west in the other.

Tentsmuir Sands is a beautiful beach in itself, but there is also history here. During World War 2, Polish soldiers built a system of defences, a part of a larger plan to defend Britain from enemy invasion. Here, you will find a WW2 observation tower as well as a target wagon. This would carry moving targets along a track and was used for target practice.

Most trails in the area are suitable for dogs, but it's important to be mindful of the environment. In areas like Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve and the Eden Estuary, dogs should be kept on a lead to protect ground-nesting birds and other wildlife. On trails crossing farmland, especially around Lucklaw Hill, it's crucial to keep dogs under close control, particularly when livestock is present.
For expansive coastal scenery, head to Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve. Trails here lead through pine forests before opening out onto the vast Tentsmuir Sands, offering views across the North Sea. The Reres Wood and Tentsmuir Sands loop from Leuchars is a long but rewarding route that combines woodland with stunning beach sections where you might even spot seals on the sandbanks.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll find prominent hills like Lucklaw Hill, which involves some ascent to its 190-meter summit, rewarding you with panoramic views. This mix provides options for both those seeking a gentle stroll and those wanting a bit more of a climb.
They offer very different experiences. Lucklaw Hill provides a classic hill walk with a steady climb to a summit that offers wide-ranging views over the Fife countryside and the Eden Estuary. The trails are a mix of woodland paths and open hillside. Tentsmuir Forest, on the other hand, offers flat, sheltered walking through extensive pine woods, leading out to a dramatic coastline of sand dunes and beach. It's more about immersive woodland and coastal scenery than elevation gain.
Beyond the immediate trails, there are several highly-regarded hiking destinations nearby. The Fife Coastal Path is a famous long-distance trail offering dramatic sea views and sandy beaches. For more challenging hill walks, Lomond Hills Regional Park is a popular favorite, known for its sweeping vistas and rocky outcrops. For a quieter woodland experience, the paths in Pitmedden Forest are also well-loved by local walkers.
The area is rich in wildlife. In Tentsmuir Forest, you have a good chance of spotting red squirrels and roe deer. The coastline is a highlight for wildlife enthusiasts, with large colonies of seals often seen basking on the sandbanks at Tentsmuir Sands. The Eden Estuary Local Nature Reserve is a key site for birdwatching, especially for waders, ducks, and geese.
