Lockerbie is a Viking name, given to the town in the 9th century by its Scandinavian inhabitants. It developed greatly in the late 18th century, when it became a popular stop off on the London to Glasgow stagecoach route. Today the market town is popular with outdoor enthusiasts due to the excellent Eskrigg Nature Reserve and the Annandale Way long distance trail, a branch of which runs through the town. The town will forever be associated with the Lockerbie Air Disaster of 1988, when Pan Am Flight 103 was blown up and crashed into the town. 270 people lost their lives, 259 onboard and 11 Lockerbie residents.
