It was a great hike and very enjoyable. It’s not too long, but part of the trail involves climbing over some rocks, which can be a bit slippery if it’s wet. The path coming back down the backside is muddy, so if it’s been raining, it’s better to return the same way you went up.

A short nice woodland run avoiding the road traffic.

Just a few hours round trip from Stirling and offering fantastic views over the city and Ochil Hills, this viewpoint makes for a wonderful hike which is less well known and a bit quieter than other peaks in the area. Start at the University, which is accessible by bus from Stirling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any easy, family-friendly walks around Menstrie?

Yes, Menstrie offers several easier walks suitable for families. While many trails involve steep climbs into the Ochil Hills, you can find gentler options. For a less strenuous outing, consider the Menstrie Community Wood Walk or a stroll along the base of the hills into Menstrie Glen. These paths provide a great introduction to the area's scenery without a major ascent.

Can I take my dog on the trails around Menstrie?

Dogs are generally welcome on the trails around Menstrie, but it's important to be responsible. The Ochil Hills are a working landscape with grazing sheep, so you must keep your dog under close control or on a lead, especially during lambing season (typically spring). Always clean up after your pet to keep the trails enjoyable for everyone.

Are there any hikes with waterfalls near Menstrie?

Yes, for a walk featuring waterfalls, head to the nearby Alva Glen. It's a highly-regarded local spot with a path that winds up through a gorge past a series of cascades. The walk can be extended to the 'Smuggler's Cave' viewpoint for impressive views over the area.

What are the parking options for hiking in Menstrie?

Most hikes start from the town of Menstrie itself. You can usually find on-street parking near the main trailheads, such as the entrance to Menstrie Glen. Please park considerately, ensuring you do not block access for local residents or emergency vehicles. Arriving early on weekends is recommended as spots can fill up quickly.

How do I get to the Menstrie trailheads using public transport?

Menstrie is well-connected by bus services from nearby hubs like Stirling and Alloa. Several bus routes run through the town, with stops conveniently located for accessing the main paths into the Ochil Hills. Check local bus timetables for the most current information to plan your journey.

What is the best time of year to hike in the Ochil Hills?

You can hike around Menstrie year-round, but late spring through early autumn (May to September) offers the best conditions with longer daylight hours and generally milder weather. The hills are particularly beautiful in late summer when the heather is in bloom. Always check the weather forecast before you go, as conditions in the Ochils can change rapidly at any time of year.

Are the trails around Menstrie well-marked?

The main paths leading from Menstrie into the glens and up the most popular hills are generally clear and easy to follow. However, higher up in the Ochil Hills, some routes may become less distinct. It's always a good idea to carry a map and compass or use a GPS device, especially if you plan to explore beyond the main tracks.

What historical sights can I see on the trails?

Many trails feature interesting historical elements. A popular walk into Menstrie Glen will take you past the ruins of Jerah, an old farmstead that offers a glimpse into the area's past. On the summit of Dumyat, you'll find a memorial to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
