Forfar is the county town and administrative centre of Angus. The town dates to Roman occupation. It was a traditional market town and became industrial with the manufacture of linin and jute. Today the main work is either agriculture or tourism. It's a good base for a road cycling holiday allowing access to the coastal roads or the cairngorms.

You can choose between 4 different trails of different lengths in Crombie Country Park. Fantastic strolls through the forest are guaranteed! My walk, following mostly the “Discovery Trail”, offers also a splendid view of the lake. Some practical info: the car park for the whole day costs 2.80 GBP (May 2020), and you’ll find lots of benches for a nice picnic :p

The area has several interesting historical features. One of the most prominent is the disused 18th-century observatory tower that sits atop Kinpurney Hill. Another route, the Forfar Witches Memorial – View of the Lake loop from Gallowshade, takes you past a memorial stone on its circuit of Forfar Loch.
Most of the popular walking areas, such as Monikie Country Park, Forfar Loch Country Park, and the start of the Carrot Hill walk, have dedicated car parks. It's always a good idea to arrive early on sunny weekends as these spots can become busy.
