Today's castle goes back to a moated castle, for which the Krückau was dammed up to create a fortified island with moats around it. The founders were the Knights of Barmstede. From 1322 the castle came to the county of Schauenburg near Rinteln on the Weser. A bailiff ruled from here in the sense of the count these northern areas. When the Schauenburgers died out, the castle came into the possession of the Rantzau family, who expanded it into a residence. After the fratricide (see the memorial in the Barmstedt Forest), the castle was confiscated by the Danish king. The buildings you see today are mainly from this period. The castle island is used in many ways today. On the one hand there is a café in the former prison, then there is an art gallery, as well as some works of art in the outdoor area, a museum on the history of the county of Rantzau and the castle building itself. The island can be freely explored and also has nice seating areas with a view of the Rantzauer Lake. Definitely worth a visit, even if you're there outside the opening hours of the café or museum. Site plan and information boards explain the individual buildings in more detail.

The Barmstedter Schlossinsel is always worth a detour. Art in Gallery III, coffee and cake in the castle prison and always exciting current special exhibitions in the Museum der Grafschaft Rantzau (Sat/Sun 2pm-5pm, Oct.-March 1pm-4pm). The small tour through the Vossloch forest is particularly recommended in hot weather, as it is always in the shade.

There is no other place in Schleswig-Holstein that is like the Rantzau Castle Island. The buildings from the Middle Ages were replaced by a manor house at the beginning of the 19th century. Overall, the island looks back on 900 years of history. The Museum Island is definitely worth a visit, because in addition to a museum, there is a café and exhibitions in the castle prison, a gallery in the old court clerk's house, handicrafts in the coach house and a pottery and weaving workshop in the nearby water mill. Rantzau Castle, which was a residential building for a long time, may soon be open to the public again. https://www.barmstedt-und-umland.de/rantzauer-see-mit-schlossinsel

The immediate Heidmoor area is known more for its natural landscapes. However, nearby you'll find historical castle sites that have evolved over time. For example, the Barmstedt Castle Island is a historical site with art installations and a unique café, while the Bramstedt Gatehouse, once part of a larger estate, now serves as a cultural center.
Yes, both Barmstedt Castle Island and Rantzau Castle Island are considered family-friendly. They offer historical settings, art installations, and cafes, providing an engaging experience for all ages.
Rantzau Castle Island, for instance, boasts 900 years of history, with its medieval buildings replaced by a manor house in the 19th century. The Barmstedt Castle Island also has a rich past, with the Krückau river originally dammed to form the castle islands. The Bramstedt Gatehouse tells the story of a former castle whose main building was demolished, with the gatehouse taking on its name and becoming a cultural hub.
Yes, on Barmstedt Castle Island, you can visit the unique Café Schloßgefängnis (Castle Prison Café), which is located in the former gatehouse. Rantzau Castle Island also features a café and exhibitions.
Both Barmstedt Castle Island and Rantzau Castle Island are surrounded by water, offering scenic lake views. The Krückau river was historically dammed to create these islands, adding to their natural charm. You can find benches on the lakeshore to relax and enjoy the scenery.
Yes, the region around Heidmoor offers various outdoor activities. You can explore hiking trails, such as the 'Wooden forest spring with carved sculpture – Forest Chapel on the Monks' Way loop' or 'Forester's house – Forest Chapel on the Monks' Way loop'. Barmstedt Castle Island is unique for its blend of history and contemporary culture. You can admire numerous art installations, relax on hidden benches, and visit the Café Schloßgefängnis, housed in a former gatehouse that served as a prison until 1927. The island's history, with the Krückau river dammed to form its distinct shape, adds to its special atmosphere.
Yes, Rantzau Castle Island is home to a museum. Additionally, the Café Schloßgefängnis on Barmstedt Castle Island also functions as a gallery with changing exhibitions.
The Bramstedt Gatehouse in Bad Bramstedt is significant because it's what remains of the historical Bramstedter Schloss. The main castle building was demolished in the 18th century, and the gatehouse was converted into a Rococo-style residence. Today, it serves as the city's cultural center, preserving a piece of local history.
On Rantzau Castle Island, you can find handicrafts in the coach house and a pottery and weaving workshop in the nearby water mill, offering unique local crafts.
The castle sites, especially those on islands like Barmstedt and Rantzau, are enjoyable during warmer months when you can fully appreciate the outdoor art installations, lake views, and café settings. However, their historical significance makes them interesting year-round.
