Today's Bad Oldesloe - Henstedt-Ulzburg cycle route follows the former narrow-gauge railway line of Elmshorn-Barmstedt-Oldesloer-Eisenbahn AG (EBOE). The section between Bad Oldesloe and Barmstedt was opened in 1907 as an extension of the Elmshorn-Barmstedt railway line, which was built in 1896. Nowadays, you can cycle here in a relaxed manner, almost always in a straight line without major inclines or declines. For over 66 years, both passenger and freight trains ran on the nearly 53 km long track with standard gauge. Until 1945, the railway line also had important supra-regional significance as a connection between the Elbmarsch and Mecklenburg. Refugee and troop transports were also carried out here during both World Wars. As early as the 1930s, passenger transport on the line was largely converted to the then modern diesel railcars. In the post-war period, however, the line only had regional importance, especially for commuter and school transport as well as the transport of agricultural products. In 1973, train traffic on the section to Barmstedt was discontinued for economic reasons and amidst protests from the local population. Passenger transport was replaced by buses. In the following years, the tracks were dismantled and a cycle route was established.
