The rock village of Freienfels is a picturesque district of the town of Hollfeld. The village is dominated by the imposing rock castle, which sits atop a dolomite cliff. It was originally built as a fortress in the 14th century. Today it is privately owned, but in the summer it serves as an atmospheric stage for the Franconian Theater Summer. There are currently plans to convert parts of the castle into a museum. The village is a popular starting point for hikes.

Great bike path between Ebensfeld and Unterleiterbach on the former B 173. The entrance via the roundabout near Ebensfeld isn't ideal in my opinion. That's why I always drive through the roundabout with cars and only then onto the bike path. The bike path is better in the other direction. Further west, there's a nice right/left chicane to keep you from falling asleep. 😊

Built between 1737 and 1739, it is a plastered building with sandstone elements, designed by the Bamberg court architect Justus Heinrich Dientzenhofer. The castle has been owned by the Heiss family since 1956. In 1976, an antiques shop was established in the building. It also houses hotel rooms.
