Just a few kilometers west of Maulbronn Monastery lies the Elfinger Hof estate, one of the monastery's first granges. Together with the neighboring vineyard, it was among the monastery's most important economic holdings. Elfinger Hof encompassed 130 to 150 hectares, and as an estate, it was described as 190 hectares in 1870 by the Maulbronn district office (see Hachenberger 1990). The estate's layout is depicted on the Württemberg cadastral map of 1835. To the west of the estate and north of Elfinger Lake, there was another pond. The updated cadastral map of 1891 shows a garden and a path leading to the drained Elfinger Lake to the south of the estate.

Schönenberg owes its origins to the Waldensians. Their leader Henri Arnaud settled in Schönenberg with a group in 1699 and built a small wooden church. He died in 1721, highly respected. In 1882 they were given permission to build a new church. The foundation stone was laid on May 31, 1883, and the inauguration took place on December 9 of the same year. The church was given the name: Henri Arnaud Church.

The Elfinger Hof or the hamlet of Elfingen was first mentioned in the Lorsch Codex in the 17th year of Charlemagne's reign, which can be dated to the period between October 9, 784 and October 8, 785, in a deed of gift to the Lorsch monastery. In addition to the Lorsch monastery, the Weissenburg monastery in Alsace was also wealthy in Elfingen. The Elfinger Hof was burned down by Württemberg troops under Duke Ulrich in the Bavarian War of Succession. Therefore, the current location no longer corresponds exactly to the original location.
