With an area of around 33 hectares, the forest cemetery is Darmstadt's largest cemetery. It opened in 1914. The architect was the Darmstadt city planning officer August Buxbaum. The cemetery was laid out in a horseshoe shape and opened up symmetrically. In the middle a north-south axis runs from the southern entrance up to the younger sections of the cemetery.
